Kansas was first settled in 1830 by European Americans. It was officially opened to residence by the government in 1854, Free-Stater's of New England and slaves from Missouri arrived at the territory to determine whether Kansas would become a free or slave state. The opening of the Kansas and Nebraska territories in 1854 under the principle of popular sovereignty provoked a protracted political crisis in both Kansas and the nation at large.

BLEEDING KANSAS...(1885-1888)
Bleeding Kansas is used to described the period of violence that happened during the settling of the Kansas. In 1854, the Nebraska Act overturned the Missouri Compromise's use of latitude as the boundary between slave and free state. The opening of the Kansas and Nebraska territories in 1854 under the principle of popular sovereignty provoked a protracted political crisis in both Kansas and the nation at large. Pro-slavery and free-state settlers rushed into Kansas and tried to influence the decision. Violence soon happened as both factions fought for control. Abolitionist John Brown was the leader of the anti-slavery fighters.
